Until the late 19th century women wore capes instead of coats, because of clothes worn then. But with times changing clothes became less bulky and the demand for coats increased. A wide range of different coat models were made for each occasion. The new ways of travel such as bicycles, automobiles, railroads, and ocean liners made it necessary for different models and different finishes to resist wind, dust, rain, or soot. Around 1900 traveling was still rather uncomfortable so an ankle length, double breasted coat with a high collar was necessary. As automobiles became more weather resistant in the 20s and 30s coats became lighter. During this same period in time the number of working women rose and also the need for a practical and thick coat. This led to the production of a few basic coats that still exist today, such as the trench coat, the knee length swing coat, and the double breasted wool coat. Women's coats developed relatively late and thus it was unable to fall back on traditional styles, designers turned to the classics in men's fashions for inspiration. After World War II coutures began to concentrate on coat design which reflected the fashion of the day. The coat's length followed a dress or skirt and coats became very short in the 1960's when designers made a simple but very elegant coats.
Today there are many different styles, manufacturers, and types of coats to fit all ages and all their daily activities, and seasons of the year.
